What is Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgery?

The scope of the speciality is extensive and a Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeon diagnoses and treats problems affecting the face, mouth, jaws, teeth and neck.  

Treatments include:

  • Dento-alveolar surgery (surgery to remove impacted teeth, difficult tooth extractions, extractions on medically compromised patients, apicectomies where the bone is infected around the apex of a root-canal treated tooth, bone grafting or pre-prosthetic surgery to provide better anatomy for the placement of implants, dentures or other dental prostheses).
  • Diagnosis and treatment of benign pathology (cysts, tumours, etc.).
  • Diagnosis and treatment of malignant pathology (oral, head and neck cancer).
  • Diagnosis and treatment of congenital cranio-facial malformations such as cleft lip and palate.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of chronic facial pain disorders.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of dysgnathia (incorrect bite), orthognathic reconstructive surgery, maxillo-mandibular advancement and surgical correction of facial asymmetry.      
  • Diagnosis and treatment of soft and hard tissue trauma of the oral and maxillo-facial region, mandible (lower jaw) fractures, zygomatico maxillary complex (cheek bone) fractures, LeFort fractures (maxillary and other mid-facial fractures), frontal sinus fractures and orbital (eye socket) fractures.
  • Surgery to insert osseointegrated (bone fused) dental implants.
